Term `Mountie' is disrespectful

The use of slang terminology has been with us for centuries and will remain with the civilized population long after we are gone. It is acceptable for short conversations between friends, new Canadians, colleagues etc.

However, if used in the wrong places such as on the front pages of newspapers it does confer a loss of respect. I am deeply troubled by the continuing use of the word Mountie as opposed to police officer which would give a great deal more respect to the profession as a whole. Mountie is one of the most slang and disrespectful terms I can think of.

In this current climate, where we are all seeking respect, we need to be respectful of others.

Respect is not always automatically given, it is also earned. I do not believe the continuing use of the word Mountie is an intentional slight against the RCMP on your part. The term has become so commonplace that we use it with out thinking of what the inference is. I wonder how the working members of the RCMP feel about being referred to as simple Mounties? It shows very little recognition or respect for the training and dedication of one of the most important professions of our society. I am quite certain that journalists would not like to be referred to in headings and subtitles as a “newsy.”

The best way to increase respect is to choose our words carefully — and use them habitually.
